Take this quiz to find out if snappier copy will help you attract new clients.
#1: Do you do all of your own writing?
Nobody understands your business like you do. It’s your brainchild, your baby.
BUT that doesn’t mean you’re the right person to write the copy. Just as you hire a lawyer and an accountant, you need a professional copywriter.
A expert copywriter will dig into your business and understand it as well as you do (or even better). You’ll get the services of a skilled professional who will create the marketing materials you want done, AND the stuff you don't even realize you need done yet, in a way that rocks your bottom line quickly and dramatically.
#2: Do you want to sell while you sleep?
With the right copy, your website can establish an instant connection with potential clients, so that they'll see that you completely understand the problems they're struggling with. You won't have to put lots of effort into convincing them to enroll in your program... after checking out your website they'll be ready to make the purchase on the spot.
A lot of people hire a graphic designer to make their website look pretty, but don’t realize the words on the page are going to have a MUCH bigger impact on their bottom line. Good copy will turn your website into a money-making magnet.
#3: Does your copy focus on features instead of benefits?
A big no-no when writing copy is to focus on the features, instead of benefits. Features tell you specifics about the product, but benefits are what the product does for you. Let's use a shot of wheatgrass as an example:
Features:
Fresh juice from young wheat
Rich in chlorophyll
8 essential amino acids
Benefits:
Provides a boost of energy
Improves digestion
Reduces cravings
Freshens breath
Aren't the benefits more enticing?
Likewise, I don't want to know that your health coaching program comes with handouts, recipes and 2 sessions per month. I want to know the benefits—that I’m going to fit back into my skinny jeans, you’re going to help me get rid of my seasonal allergies, that I won’t have to keep missing work because of migraines, I’ll look stunning walking down the aisle on my wedding day.
A copywriter uses research and psychology to get inside the mind of the customer, allowing the reader to imagine how this service will rock their world.
#4: Do you cringe at the blank page?
If you hate writing, are not good at writing, or love to write but freeze when you try to write about your own business, you need a copywriter.
I’ve worked with brilliant businesspeople, including realtors who have made millions selling buildings on Madison Avenue. I don't know how to sell an office building. But they don't know how to write a snappy press release about the sale, get the New York Times to write a story about the deal, which leads to tons of visibility and even bigger sales.
Don't get stuck - you can't afford it!
Clue #5: Are you too busy for writing?
I once worked with a small business owner who was busy going to meetings, managing her staff and returning phone calls all day, so she stayed up until midnight writing, after her kids were in bed. After she hired me to write, she devoted more time to strategic planning and new business pitches, and her business started to grow immediately. If writing is taking the back burner in your business, hire someone who can make it a priority.
